Explore the greater Baviaanskloof Wilderness area and Grootrivierpoort from the seat of your saddle.

The Baviaanskloof (valley of the Baboons) lies between the Baviaanskloof Mountain range in the north and the Kouga mountains in the west This 192 000ha conservation area was awarded ‘World Heritage Status’. It is home to a wide variety of habitats and species. Proteas, Karoo scrubs, Yellowwoods and many more can be seen. A variety of animals like Kudu and Mountain reedbuck roam the hills and valleys. On the Baviaanskloof side there are campsites and lodges. You will see other mountain bikers or hikers as well as people in their 4x4’s. On the Grootrivier poort side of the Baviaanskloof Mountains it is extremely remote and the silence is overpowering.

Mountainbikingsouthafrica with the professional help from Bhejane 4x4 adventures will take you on a trip not to be forgotten. Accommodation will be in tents . You will experience nature at its best.

Bhejane will be our host in the evenings. They will see to it that a camp is set up when you arrive at the end of each days cycling. They will pitch your tent and the chef will prepare delicious meals. All you have to do after your hard day’s cycling is to sit down and enjoy a beer while you watch the sun set.

Along the route snacks and energy drinks will be provided. A backup vehicle will follow you. A guide will accompany on the bike. This is quite a tough ride but is within the means of any fairly fit individual

Tour program:

DAY 1
Arrive after lunch at Campsite near Patensie. Supper around the campfire.

DAY 2
We start cycling in an eastern direction towards the Grootrivierpoort. A distance of 65km. This route will take you through beautiful and remote countryside. You will use your granny gear a few times today. The climb out of the Grootrivierpoort is spectacular!

DAY 3
Today we will do 90km. The route is hilly but nothing like yesterday. Camp in the remote Winterhoek area.

DAY 4
We enter the Baviaanskloof from the west. 75km to go today. Camp at Bo-kloof.

DAY 5
62km of spectacular cycling. Camp at Rooihoek

DAY 6
Today you will cycle through the heart of the Baviaanskloof. After a lazy breakfast we cycle 45km to end tour at the campsite from where we started the tour. Last meal under the stars.

DAY 7
Home sweet home!


The dates for 2010 Baviaans Mega tour are as follow:
10 to 16th of October

Port Elizabeth is the nearest airport to Patensie from where the tour starts.
Transport to and from Port Elizabeth Airport can be organized at extra costs. Another option to get to PE is to hop on to the Shosholoza Meyl train and spend a day relaxing and sightseeing before you start the tour. See www.shosholozameyl.co.za for more info. The train leaves from different destinations in South Africa.

What you will need to bring:
Your mountain bike (bikes are available at extra cost but on a tour like this your own bike will be the most comfortable one to use)
Personal clothes, toiletries and medication
SUNSCREEN
Cycling clothes for any weather conditions (the weather in April and October is usually pleasant and dry but with global warming….???)
Thermorest or blow up mattress (we will do the blowing up part)
Sleeping bag and pillow
Excluded: Accommodation before and after tour.

A cash bar will be availlable
Make sure that you have medical insurance that will cover any injuries on a tour like this. WE will be cycling in remote areas and you will need to be covered for any emergency that can occur.
