This tour will cover a distance of approximately 559km. You have to be fit to do it. You will spend four to six hours per day in the saddle, and you will climb many hills!
It's an ideal trip if you want to train for a multistage race but also wonderful to enjoy at a reasonable pace just for the sake of cycling and enjoying the view.
DAY 1 (76/96km)
We meet in Plettenberg Bay. Load your gear into the backup vehicle and get on to your bike.
The route starts in Plettenberg Bay and takes you to Knysna. We go via the beginning of the Prince Albert Pass and after a climb of 2,5km, we hit the gravel road. We do a section through the trees and turn towards Diepwalle forest station. Then it's an awesome climb on jeep track and finally we reach the Diepwalle Forestry Station.
The local community manages a tearoom from here where we will satisfy our hunger pangs.
Now there are two options:
1. 24 km of awesome riding through the forest on ‘Petrus se brand’ route. The downside of this is that you will have to do another 20km on tar road to get to your accommodation. This will give you 96km of cycling for the day.
2. Take the shorter route through the forest to Gouna and Knysna. Still an awesome ride, and a total of 76km this way.
DAY 2 (78km)
From Knysna we go past Belvedere, up Phantom pass, Rheenendal and then do the road known as ’Seven Passes”. Uh oh! This road leads through a lonely landscape with spectacular views. We sleep on lovely soft beds in luxury accommodation near George.
DAY 3 (78km)
From George we go up the spectacular Montaqu Pass, which is is a challenge for any mountain biker. The views are worth the effort. The road was built by 250 convicts in 1847. Originally toll was paid at one penny per wheel and one penny per ox. We go through Perdepoort Pass to Dyseldorp and sleep near De Rust.
DAY 4 (80km)
Leaving for a day of climbing a majestic mountain. We pass the Rust & Vrede waterfall on our way to the Swartberg Pass. This masterpiece was build by Thomas Baine and is at 1583 meters above sea level. We stay over in the delightful Karoo village of Prince Albert. A culinary feast awaits you!
DAY 5 (96km)
From Prince Albert we take the road to Klaarstroom, mountain biking through a beautiful countryside. To do this we pass through Meiringspoort. This 25km piece of tar road crosses the’ Groot Rivier’ 25 times. The road is remarkable but the overwhelming feature of traveling through the poort is the wonders of nature, and there is no better way to experience this than on a mountain bike. Tonight we will stay over in luxury accommodation. The details will remain a secret!! The food and the company will often be discussed after the tour.
DAY 6 (93km)
This is going to be a long day. We will get on to our mountain bikes and stay on them for most of the day! We follow a gravel road through the countryside and your fellow mountain bikers will most probably be the only other people you see for the next 40 km.
This is a remote and beautiful part of our world. Your legs will only come to rest after cycling up and down one of South Africa’s most spectacular passes. Tonight you will really enjoy a well prepared meal and a soft bed.
DAY 7 (58km)
Time to go home! Take the road to Kruisvalei, then Wittedrift and Plett.
If you are up to it, this day can be very exciting. We can do an alternative route through Harkerville. If your legs are tired and you want to go home….we take the shortest route
An Alternative option to this tour is to make it longer and cycle through the Gamkaskloof and/or the Baviaanskloof.
Gamkaskloof (‘Die Hel’)
From Prince Albert you go back up the Swartbergpass up to the turn off to Gamkaskloof.
A small community lived in isolation in this fascinating kloof for more than 100 years. Access was on foot and horseback. The 57km road was built in 1962 and takes at least 5 hours to travel with a 4x4 vehicle. On you mountain bike it won’t take you much longer!
The kloof was named ‘The Hell’ but locals refuse to accept the name. This detour will add two extra days to your tour as well as additional costs. THIS ROUTE IS A REAL CHALLENGE FOR EVEN A FIT MOUNTAIN BIKER!!
Baviaanskloof:
From Uniondale you cycle in an eastern direction to enter the Baviaanskloof. This nature conservation area comprises of approximately 189 000 ha of unspoiled rugged mountainous terrain. A road of about 203 km will take you from Willowmore to Komdomo. It follows the gorge of the ‘Grootrivier”. Mountain biking through this is an exhilarating experience. Once a year a 24 hour mountain bike race takes place through this beautiful wilderness. Leopards of the Baviaanskloof are still seen by farmers. A research program is running and most farms is part of the ‘Leopard friendly’ program.
This detour will add two extra days to the tour and additional costs. You will have to be transported back to Plettenberg Bay by vehicle from Patensie.
The price includes:
- Accommodation in luxury guesthouses
- Supper for 6 days.
- Breakfast for 6 days
- Lunchtime snacks.
- Energy drinks.
- Back up vehicle and support.
As an extra treat ….three massages for your tired legs and a bottle of special selected wine to help you relax.
