THE SLOW LIVING BAVIAANS TOUR

Slow living is the new buzz word throughout the world. We at Mountainbikingsouthafrica decided to plan a trip to embrace this outlook on life. The Baviaanskloof is one of the most spectacular areas in South Africa to spend a few days . This tour through the Baviaans will cover 30 to 40km per day and will give you ample time to enjoy all the other great things available in the kloof. Food and drink and scenery will be first class. A safari on your bike!


The tour starts on a Monday on a farm near Uniondale. The Mountainbikingsouthafrica team will meet you and transfer your luggage to our vehicles. Your vehicles will be safe here for the duration of the tour.

Monday: Day one covers a distance of 34km. You will go up and down the Nuwekloof pass to
enter the red cliffs of the Baviaanskloof. We will stop for lunch and you will have ample time to take pictures. Accomodation at a beutiful lodge. Go for a hike to see the spectacular orhan pipe rock formation

Tuesday: After breakfast we start cycling. Today’s route is spectacular. Only 18km to go. Enough time after the ride to go for a hike up a slot canyon with Skollie as your guide. Stop at Vero's tea garden to buy T-shirts and have your second cup for the day. Ample time to swim and use your camera. Accommodation in a farm cottage.

Wednesday: Distance 25km. (plus 4km to lunch).
Many water crossings on this day. Your feet are going to get wet. A small detour takes you to the Seven Fountain farm and the Wild Fig forrest. Green lawns, beautiful gardens and a cool swimming pool awaits you at the end of this day.

Thursday: We head for Doodsklip camping site in the conservation area, 40km over a hectic pass. Rooi ribbok crossing.When entering the conservation area you have to stay in a group. Buffalo roam free and if you are lucky you may see Rhino. There are no formal accommodation in the Nature conservation area so we will camp next to the river. The only bath you will have tonight is in the river so bring eco- friendly shampoo!

Friday: 32km to go today. The route includes “the mother of all passes". When reaching the plateau at Bergplaas look out for Roohartbees and Gnu. An awesome downhill ride towards Patensie follows. Accomodation in cottages with a breathtaking view..

Saturday: Breakfast and transfer back to Uniondale (not included in rates)

The crew will prepare all meals and see to your every need. On the days camping we pitch the tents and supply everything that you need to have a comfortable and enjoyable experience. When you reach the camp, the fire will be burning and a kettle of strong home brew will be waiting. You can kick off your shoes and relax. Shower facilities will be available everywhere but at Doodsklip. A bucket shower will be provided for those who do not feel like a bath in the river.
Baked 'potbrood' after your ride. Delicious meals for supper. No cyclist will go to bed hungry!

Alcoholic beverages and soft drinks.
All transfers out of the tour in case of an emergency or injury.

What you will have to do:
Get a group of friends together. A maximum of 12 riders per tour.
Complete an entry form(found on the website) and send it back to us.
Book your accommodation for Sunday eve before the tour
Pack your kit in a 'not to big' bag. The more kit you bring the less space we have for food and drink!
Try and be fairly fit. Those hills can be tough. The max distance per day will be 40 tough km.
